IndyBar: President’s Column

  • Print

We, the elected and appointed leaders of the Indianapolis Bar Association, pledge to do the work necessary to bring about change to achieve equality, diversity and inclusion in the Indianapolis legal community and beyond. To Indianapolis lawyers, law students and paralegals and the community at large, we are committed to immediate action to investigate and report on the state of equality, diversity and inclusion within our Indianapolis legal network and to enact policies to eliminate barriers and grow a more diverse and inclusive legal community. As officers of the court, we are also committed to criminal justice reform that gains trust and ensures that we will no longer fear tragedies such as the death of George Floyd.

Our country was founded on and relies upon the rule of law, which must be fair to everyone. The Indianapolis legal community must will a restorative role to help dismantle barriers created by systemic racism within the legal system and beyond. We must address the biases that often prevent people of color from enjoying equal protection under the law. And, thus, we must strive to improve our justice system to ensure equal rights for all citizens, regardless of race, ethnicity, or skin color.
