The Marion County Courts will be closed Monday out of respect for a Marion County sheriff’s deputy who was killed this month in the line of duty.

Services for Deputy John Durm, 61, will include a public view from 2-7 p.m. Sunday at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The public can still visit the Marion County Clerk’s Office in the City-County Building for services Monday, according to an order signed by Marion Circuit Judge Amber Collins-Gebrehiwet.

John Durm

Durm died July 10 after inmate Orlando Mitchell used his handcuff chain to strangle Durm as the deputy was returning him to the Criminal Justice Center in Indianapolis, according to The Associated Press.

Mitchell, who was incarcerated on suspicion of his killing his ex-girlfriend, has been charged with murder for Durm’s death and will face the death penalty if convicted, AP reported.

Durm had been a deputy with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department for 38 years. He was married with four children.

A memorial for Durm is set up at the Community Justice Campus on the city’s east side. Community members have been placing flowers on a Marion County Sheriff’s van this past week in the deputy’s honor.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the Central Indiana Police Foundation to create a Memorial Fund for Durm.
