Marion County’s Second Chance Workshop, a program that helps reinstate suspended driver’s licenses and expunge criminal convictions, has secured $96,000 in federal aid.

Marion Co. Prosecutor Ryan Mears

U.S. Rep. Andre Carson

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears’ office announced last week that the funding had been secured by U.S. Rep. André Carson, D-Indianapolis, as part of the American Restoration Act of 2021, which was signed into law on March 15. The legislation includes more than $3.4 million for nine community projects in Marion County.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the funding will help Second Chance’s efforts to support the “substantial demand” for the service in Marion County. The program, which launched in 2019, has assisted more than 3,000 residents through its in-person and virtual workshops, the office said.

“Driver’s license reinstatement and expungement services are integral pieces to ensuring that those impacted by the criminal justice system can get back on their feet and secure meaningful employment,” Mears said in a news release. “Our Second Chance Workshops have been instrumental in bringing that assistance directly to the people who need it, and the Prosecutor’s Office is grateful to have the support of Congressman Carson in this effort.”
