Elkhart County Sheriff Brad Rogers said the jail in Indianapolis is under a federal mandate to reduce its inmate population and will be transferring as many as 50 detainees to Elkhart County as soon as Tuesday. Elkhart County already houses 91 inmates from Marion County.
WTHR-TV reported that Elkhart County earns $40 a day per inmate. Rogers says the increase in detainees could boost revenue to $2 million a year.
Rogers says Marion County plans to continue to feed inmates to Elkhart County for the foreseeable future.
