The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana added a Yes! You Can Vote! card to each Constitution. The card provides information about voting rights for several groups including individuals who have been incarcerated, people with disabilities, recently naturalized citizens, transgender individuals and students.
“We are thrilled that more people than ever are expressing an interest in their constitutional rights and the rights of their neighbors,” said ACLU of Indiana executive director Jane Henegar. “The U.S. Constitution contains the spirit and spine of our democracy. But, citizens must know and use the power it gives us, We the People.”
Constitution Day commemorates the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787. Teachers can click here for fun, educational activities. Also, a constitution study guide and resources can be found here.
“Our national values are undermined when candidates and elected officials disregard the critical role of free speech and a free press, as well as the rights of immigrant families, in a democracy,” Henegar said. “As a nation, the biggest lever individuals have to protect the Constitution and their rights, is exercising the right to vote.”
Community groups partnering with the ACLU of Indiana to celebrate Constitution day include Cummins, Exodus Refugee Immigration Inc., Greater Indianapolis NAACP, Immigrant Welcome Center, Indiana Undocumented Young Alliance, Indiana Youth Group, Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council, La Plaza, League of Women Voters of Indiana, Muslim Alliance of Indiana, Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky and Women4Change.
