Hickey: Be One. Have Fun. Thank You.
A year ago, I began my IndyBar presidency with three simple messages: Be One. Have Fun. Thank You.
This year began with a wish: that the Indianapolis Bar Association would flourish and that our community of remarkable people, wonderful lawyers and great friends would grow even stronger.
This is an exciting time of year and as I sat down to write this article, it became clear to me how important it is to have things to look forward to, things you can count on.
I am a firm believer that checklists improve efficiency and increase accuracy.
For years, people have been trying to capture what the future holds for the legal profession.
Earlier this year, I promised that we would introduce you to the many faces of the Indianapolis Bar Association.
To say that we got where we are without the help of others would be a lie, no matter who you are.
Sometimes, you get so busy that the weather out your window is as foreign as a fat-free Big Mac. Sometimes, you just need to stop and be inspired.
Pro Bono: for the public good. As lawyers, we know this as legal work undertaken free of charge.
From what started as a 30-member group in 1878 to what is now a growing association with nearly 5,000 members, the IBA has come a long way since well before we became members.
“Common,” as in shared by two or more people or as in done often or not rare. Common can also mean belonging to or affecting the whole of a community as in common land. These definitions capture the spirit of the members of our Bar; I witnessed this first-hand recently through an initiative called Common Goal.
It is hard to believe, but the year is officially half over. Reflecting on the first six months, it has been a very productive, very good time for the Bar.

Several weeks ago, I attended a press conference called by Attorney General Greg Zoeller. The news to be released: that attorneys are once again doing good.
No, Belva is not a current IBA member. In fact, she was never an IBA member; however,
I was just “introduced” to her and thought the timing remarkable given that I had already decided to write this
President’s Message on celebrating Mother’s Day.
Who says that hard work and persistence don’t pay off? Well before the E-Trade talking baby commercials, our local judges
were exerting their energy in formulating the framework of a plan to bring efficiencies to court filings.
You might be wondering about the title to this President's Message. This column is devoted to membership and I thought it fitting that the "I" be replaced with "you"; this is Your Bar Association.
