Marion County small claims courts go on record

On July 1, the small claims courts in Indiana’s most populous county are going to become courts of record. Like the small claims courts in the state’s 91 other counties, Marion County’s proceedings will be recorded and any appeals will go straight to the Indiana Court of Appeals.

State secret: DOC presses lethal injection confidentiality

A law slipped into the 2017 budget bill during the General Assembly’s final hours declared that information about drugs that the state would use to execute someone was confidential. Nine named as finalists to fill Marion County bench vacancies

The Marion County Judicial Selection Committee has selected nine finalists to be considered to fill three upcoming Marion County court vacancies after interviewing 40 candidates over a three-day period. It’s the first time the committee has selected nominees to the trial court bench for the governor’s selection.

Lake Superior Court shutters Gary Probate Division

The Gary Probate Division of the Lake Superior Court has permanently closed and all files opened in that court have been transferred to the Crown Point Probate Division. The Indiana State Bar Association announced the closure of the Gary Probate Division last month.

Gary man pleads guilty, faces life term in 7 women’s deaths

A Gary man has avoided the death penalty by pleading guilty in the deaths of seven women and instead faces life in prison without parole. Darren Vann of Gary, Indiana, entered the guilty pleas during a surprise court hearing Friday in Crown Point. He will be sentenced May 25.
