A former Indianapolis private high school boys' basketball coach has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for trying to entice a 15-year-old student to have sex with him.

A federal judge ordered the prison term Friday for former Indianapolis Park Tudor School coach Kyle Cox. Cox pleaded guilty in May to a charge of coercion and enticement.

Prosecutors sought the 14-year sentence under the plea agreement, while defense attorneys asked for a 10-year term.

Authorities say Cox was 31 when he sent sexually explicit online messages, texts and photos to the female student and tried to arrange for her to visit his home for sexual activity.

Cox told the judge he was sorry for causing pain and has enormous shame for his actions.

Cox, who joined the prestigious school in 2009, led the basketball team to state 2A championships in 2014 and 2015. He was also a chemistry teacher at the school.

A 30-page criminal complaint filed by federal investigators in U.S. District Court said Cox began sending sexually explicit messages to the girl in September and tried to arrange for her to visit his home in Fishers for sexual activity while his wife and children were away in mid-December.

The meeting didn't happen after the girl's father saw messages and photos on her phone that she acknowledged trading with Cox, according to the complaint.

The complaint alleged Park Tudor officials and their attorney impeded authorities as they investigated the allegations into Cox, prompting the school to hire a team of attorneys to protect it.
