The trial of a southern Indiana man accused of killing his former girlfriend and eating some of her internal organs has been pushed back to June 2017.
Clark Circuit Judge Vicki Carmichael granted the delay Thursday from Joseph Oberhansley's attorneys to allow them more time to prepare their defense. The trial had been scheduled to begin this month.
The Jeffersonville man is charged with murder, rape and abuse of a corpse in the September 2014 slaying of 46-year-old Tammy Jo Blanton. He could be sentenced to death if convicted.
The (Louisville, Kentucky) Courier-Journal reports Oberhansley didn't appear in court for the hearing.
Court documents say Oberhansley told investigators that after he broke into Blanton's home, he struck her with a knife, mutilated her and consumed parts of her body.
