Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett will announce a new Marion County Jail and Criminal Justice Center will be built at the near-east side site of the former Citizens Gas & Coke Utility Plant on Prospect Street, WTHR-13 News reported Monday, citing unnamed sources.

A spokeswoman in the mayor’s office would not immediately confirm or deny the report, but did confirm Hogsett plans to make an announcement regarding the justice center site location at 10 a.m. Jan. 31. The spokeswoman declined to say where the statement would be made.

An announcement of the location for the complex had been expected by the end of January under the plan Hogsett announced late last year for a new justice center. The centerpiece of the facility is an assessment and intervention center with health, addiction and social services components as a point of entry into the new jail, envisioned with 2,600-3,000 beds.

Meanwhile, no decision has been made about whether some or all of Marion County’s courts will locate at the site. According to a project timeline, the Marion County judiciary will make that determination by May 1.

The Hogsett administration examined sites in a study prepared under former Mayor Greg Ballard that included 12 sites, but excluded Ballard’s preferred site of the former General Motors stamping plant west of White River and South of Washington Street.

A source familiar with site finalists said they included the Citizens’ location, where the former plant has been demolished; the former RCA plant at Michigan and Sherman streets on the near-east side, which is in the final stages of demolition; and a site at Indianapolis International Airport on the far-west side.
