Indiana Chief Justice Loretta Rush will fill in for Justice Steven David as the chair of the Marion County Judicial Selection Committee after he retires at the end of the month.

According to an order signed Aug. 5, Rush will serve as the ex officio chair of the committee beginning Sept. 1 until further order of the Indiana Supreme Court.

The committee consists of 14 members who serve for four years: four attorney members appointed by legal associations, four members selected by legislative leaders, four members appointed by the chairs of both political parties, one vice-chair and one Supreme Court justice who serves as chair. Court of Appeals of Indiana Judge Robert Altice is currently the vice chair.

The judicial selection committee is required to evaluate candidates for openings on the Marion Superior Court bench and submit to the governor three nominees who are the most highly qualified from among all the eligible individuals considered. Currently, there are no pending vacancies on the Marion Superior Court for which a candidate has not been selected.

David’s retirement ceremony is planned for Aug. 30, with his official retirement starting the next day. Soon-to-be-Justice Derek Molter will be sworn in by Rush on Sept. 1.
