The man was in serious but stable condition, Indianapolis police spokesman Shane Foley said.
Foley said six deputies were dispatched to serve the warrant but he offered few details about what led to the shooting, saying it was under investigation.
The officers found the man around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. He had a warrant in Tennessee for aggravated assault with a weapon.
No firearm was located on the man, Foley said.
Indianapolis police are investigating while the Marion County Sheriff’s Office conducts an internal review. The deputy wasn’t identified and will be placed on administrative leave.
