The Indiana Lawyer’s Leadership in Law photos this year were taken at the headquarters of Indiana Landmarks, a statewide nonprofit dedicated to preserving and protecting historic Hoosier structures.

The Indiana Landmarks campus, at 1201 Central Ave., is a prime example of this work. Constructed in 1891, with additions in 1900 and 1922, the Romanesque Revival-style building was originally home to the Central Avenue Methodist Church. Its primary sanctuary, designed by architects Williams and Otter, borrowed from theater architecture, featuring radiating aisle, curvilinear pews and a curved balcony under a stunning domed ceiling.

Once the largest Methodist congregation in the state, its former members included influential leaders Sen. Richard Lugar, Rep. Lee Hamilton and Gov. Frank O’Bannon.

When the congregation merged with another Methodist church in 1999, the building became home to the Old Centrum Foundation. However, due to long-deferred and much-needed maintenance, the building fell into disrepair and was closed in 2008 — that same year, a 30-foot section of the domed sanctuary collapsed.

A $19 million renovation led by philanthropists Bill, Gayle and Carl Cook brought the building back to life, converting the sanctuary and Sunday school space into theaters and the office wing into the headquarters of Indiana Landmarks. The building reopened in 2011 and is now used for performances and public and private events.

From the law firm board room to economic development projects across Indiana, attorney Tom Froehle has left an impressive imprint.

Froehle, partner and chair emeritus at Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath, led the forerunners of his current firm through two significant mergers, ultimately putting it among the 50 largest firms in the nation.

As a public finance attorney, he put his stamp on some of the largest economic development projects in the state over the past 30 years—from the Honda assembly plant in Greensburg to Lucas Oil Stadium and the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis.

“His vision and leadership have helped drive positive change and growth in the legal industry and state of Indiana,” Kathy Osborn, a Faegre Drinker partner, said in her award nomination for Froehle.

For all of these accomplishments and for his contributions to civic groups and his ongoing mentoring of up-and-coming attorneys, The Indiana Lawyer selected Froehle as its Leadership in Law Lifetime Achievement Award winner for 2025.

Harrison Presidential Site hosts photo shoot

The Indiana Lawyer’s Leadership in Law photos this year were taken at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, the Indianapolis home of the nation’s 23rd president and the only president elected from Indiana.

The 10,000-square-foot, 10-room Italianate Victorian home, completed in 1875, was selected because of Harrison’s esteemed career as an attorney. He argued 15 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Indiana Lawyer’s Lead Designer Audrey Pelsor and photographer Chad Williams used the Harrison home’s library, grand parlors, ornate entryway, gorgeous staircase and outdoor vistas as backdrops.

Featured on the cover of this year’s Leadership in Law special section are Lifetime Achievement Award winner Tom Froehle, pictured in Harrison’s library, and honorees Bill Kaiser, Bianca Eddy and Cyndi Blocher.
